Time Zone

Beijing time is 8 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+8)



The unit of Chinese currency is the CNY (¥).

Coin denominations are 1 jiao (¥0.1), 5 jiao (¥0.5) and ¥1 .

Banknotes are ¥1, ¥5, ¥10, ¥20, ¥50, ¥100.


Credit cards

China UnionPay, Visa, Alipay (Network Payment Platform) and Wechat (Network Payment Platform) are widely accepted at major hotels, shops and restaurants in the larger cities of China. Check with your credit card company or Network Payment Platform for details of merchant acceptability and other services which may be available.


Traveler's check

Accepted, but may be difficult to change in smaller towns. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travelers are advised to take Traveler's check in CNY.


Business Hours

Government office hours are usually from 9:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and closed on weekends.

Banks are open from 8:30 to 17:30 on weekdays and closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

Most stores are open every day from 8:00 to 21:00, including Sundays.

All the merchandise in China are duty-free.



Tipping is not a traditional custom in China. A 10% service charge will be added to your bill at some large tourist restaurants and hotels. It is also not necessary to tip a taxi driver unless he assists you with luggage or provides an extra service.


Electricity and Voltage

The standard voltage in China is 220 volts. The outlet which has two erect rectangle holes (or with a round hole upside) is the same type used in America, Canada, Japan, Thailand and many other countries. The outlet which has two oblique rectangle holes (or with a rectangle hole upside) is the same type used in Australia, New Zealand and so on. If you do not have a multi-voltage travel adapter, you can borrow one from your hotel’s front desk if they offer this service. If you want to buy one in China, you can do so at a convenience shop, Electronics Shopping Town, or other big supermarket.
